If you take special care of your teeth and they are in good condition, you should come to see us for a checkup at least twice a year. If you have periodontitis, gingivitis or are predisposed to dental decay, more frequent visits may be needed.
Regular visits and preventive care will prevent not only dental disease, but could prevent more costly treatments in the future.
Our tip: Schedule your next appointment at each visit.
Proper oral hygiene habits are learned early. As soon as your toddler can manage a toothbrush (24-30 months), supervised brushing instructions can create beneficial habits that last a lifetime. Remember, children under 6 should be supervised at all times as swallowing toothpaste can be harmful.
Mathis Family Dentistry recommends a first dentist visit somewhere in the third year. Establishing regular visits at a young age has proven to improve the health and stability of adult teeth.
Generally speaking, we begin seeing children at age 3 unless there are obvious problems beforehand. At this time, we will clean their teeth, apply a topical fluoride treatment, attempt to take digital radiographs and do a thorough exam.
For most adults and teens, we recommend a check-up and cleaning every six months. If periodontal disease is present, more frequent professional care is indicated. For patients who are more susceptible to decay, more frequent visits may be necessary.
Routine check-ups also involve screening for oral cancer. If you develop sores that dint heal completely in one week, any lumps or swelling, red or whitish patches, unexplained bleeding or numbness, have difficulty swallowing or speaking or any other oral symptoms that just don't seem "quite right", seek help immediately.
We schedule our cleaning or "prophylactic" appointments 6 months in advance to try and prevent patients from "falling through the cracks." Our hygiene department boasts of four AWESOME hygienists! They love their jobs and look forward to seeing their patients. Call today to schedule your first visit - we can't wait to meet you.
